Happy to be heading to a new destination and it was a morning departure out of Dubai with 6 and a half hours over to Geneva Airport in Switzerland. Landing at lunchtime I changed quickly and decided to make my way into the city for a bit of sightseeing so that I wouldn’t waste too much revision time before my SEP Recurrent directly after this flight!
I walked around 10 minutes to the bus stop, waited 30 minutes whilst two buses drove past me and then took a 10 minute journey into the city. I was considering heading to Annecy in France but after all this effort and struggling to find where bus stops were, I thought I would just stay in Geneva.
First stop was Starbucks as I was struggling to stay awake and wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed, so I grabbed an iced caramel machiatto and headed in the direction of Jet d’Eau.
The Jet d’Eau is a large fountain in Geneva, Switzerland and is one of the city’s most famous landmarks, being featured on the city’s official tourism web site and on the official logo for Geneva’s hosting of the 2008 UEFA Championships.
Situated at the point where Lake Geneva empties into the Rhône, it is visible throughout the city and from the air, even when flying over Geneva at an altitude of 10 kilometres (33,000 ft) and has five hundred litres of water per second which are jetted to an altitude of 140 metres (460 ft) by two 500 kW pumps.
You can walk right up to the fountain and feel the spray blast you as it plummets back down to earth.
I strolled back through the city in the search of cheese fondue, when it Switzerland and all hey? When I came across a little place called Auberge de Savièse.
The menu looked fab and it had a high rating for cheese fondue when I did a quick look on Trip Advisor, so I took a table by the window and opted for the Morel Mushrooms Cheese Fondue that the waiter had recommended.
Food was incredible, and although it did start to get sickly towards the end, I managed to finish nearly all of it.
It cost €30 for a small fondue for one and a bottle of still water. Quite pricey for cheese, but relatively cheap for Switzerland. I sat and Skyped my parents whilst I ate before I called it a day and went back to the hotel to revise.
A very quick trip into the city, but exams take priority sadly and revision was calling. I’m happy to say I’ve passed all my exams and practicals though and my flying licence is renewed for another year. Can’t believe that was my third SEP! Where is time going…
