We’ve received our first rosters for 2018, and despite thinking that I was going to be on reserve as I managed to skip it last month, I actually got a full roster with 4 out of 5 things I asked for! Happy days. So in January I shall be going to…
HKG – Hong Kong, Layover
FRA – Frankfurt, Germany Layover
ALG – Algiers, Algeria Layover
MNL – Manilla, Philippines Layover
KWI – Farwaniya, Kuwait Turn Around
GLA – Glasgow, UK Layover
DUR – Durban, South Africa Layover
KBL – Kabul, Afghanistan Turn Around
Flying at 3am to Hong Kong on New Year’s Day there will be no New Years Eve celebrations for me. My roster says I have been there 4 times now and I’m not sure what else I can do there. I would try and Swap but the likelihood of swaps on New Years Day are probably limited, it would be nice if I could extend my leave and spend New Years Eve at home though!
Following on from this I have a new destination of Frankfurt. This will complete all the destinations we fly to in Germany and it will be nice to see and explore a new place.
Right after this I have five days off in a row, so I can join my parents on their ski trip. So I’ll be landing from Germany and going straight back to Munich hopefully on the next flight there. It’ll be great to have a relaxing 5 day break, let’s just hope it doesn’t end as badly as my last trip there.
Bringing me back to work after my ski trip is a new country and destination for me to tick off with Algiers in Algeria. I’ve wanted to visit for a while now, everyone’s photos look very picturesque. If anyone has any tips on things to do there though, please do let me know!
After this I have Manilla. I’ve been a couple of times now so I’m unsure what I’ll get up to. I’ve put it up on the swaps page anyhow as I’m sure by now you know I don’t like destination repeating and I’m eager to tick off new places.
A quick turn around to Kuwait before I’ve got Glasgow which I have visited previously. I’m still yet to visit Edinburgh and it’s a weekend trip is this, so it’ll be so nice to explore a new city and wrap up warm and stock up on my favourite UK essentials.
After this I’m off to Durban. I’ve been a couple of times now and other than steak and red wine I’m not sure what else to do? It will be summer there which will be nice but I’m hoping to swap for a London to go and celebrate two of the girls I lived with at uni’s birthdays! I miss out on many people’s birthdays with this job, so it’d be nice to not have the left out feeling for once haha. Keep posted for where I end up.
I then end the month with a turn around to Afghanistan and before we know it, the month will be up!
So that summarises January, can’t quite believe I’m posting about 2018 already. Can’t wait to see what else 2018 brings for me destination wise.

In HK hike the dragon back ridge. Beautiful views, fresh air, quiet. It’s easily accessible on MTR then bus, and can be done in a few hours.

Thank you! I shall definitely do this!

Yes, completely agree with the above, hike the dragon back ridge! Or if the flight was crazy and you don’t have energy anymore, take the ferry to Lamma island. It’s very laid back, hippie and no cars are allowed. I can’t believe you bid for Algiers though! Just make sure to spend all your allowance in the hotel, as they don’t accept it in the airport (weird eh? Their own money but they only take euros and dollars) and you can’t change it in Dubai. Merry Christmas 🙂

Okay I’ll definitely try and head over and go to Dragon Back Ridge. Why? I do this job to travel and I’ve never been! Why not go somewhere with work that you would never go on your own! I’m trying to tick off all our layover destinations. Okay thanks for the tip, I have so much currency back in Dubai I could start up my own bureau de change! Merry Christmas to you too Nik 😊

Jessica,
Always enjoy reading your blogs.Even though our US Dept of state issued a travel warning to Algeria, we still went there and glad we did.Loved the city of Constantine,it is aptly called the city of bridges. As long as you don’t go into the remote areas and stay with your groups, you will be fine. Enjoy ur trip.Happy new year.
